Genius Coffee

Located in the Ywar Ngan Township in Myanmar’s Southern Shan State, Genius Coffee is a reflection of the people who produce it. A quaint high mountain community, Ywar Ngan harkens back to a time when life was simple and pure. The local farmers are members of the Danu Hill Tribe; they are growers who work the same hills as their ancestors once did. Genius Coffee recognizes this community bond to its land, people and community. In an effort to exercise Fair Trade practices, Genius works closely with other local farmers to see that 10 percent of total revenues go towards development projects in the surrounding villages.  Additionally, Genius proudly promotes its coffees as USDA and EU organic certified.

Environmental sustainability is an important element of the Genius business model. A variety of different shade trees promote biodiversity, while decayed leaves and coffee husks are used as fertilizer. Genius also strives to see that their sustainable coffee is grown in a manner that is kind to the environment and its people.


Genius specialty grade coffee is a blend of Catuai, Catimor and S795 varieties; the latter is known to exhibit rust resistance, high yield, and a good cup profile, making it a highly desirable cultivar. These trees are grown in small lot farms between 1200 – 2200m. During harvest all cherries are hand-picked and sorted. Because pesticides are strictly prohibited in Ywar Ngan, Genius coffee is guaranteed to be free of chemicals.
